Learning as I Go
To become the best learner, one needs to know on what one needs to work and with how one can improve. With the adaptation of learning process, people can maximize the ability to gain knowledge and information rapidly in the society, helping ourselves to achieve better in the future. In order to become a successful person, he or she needs to follow the steps to the point where he or she can develop the best product, as a learning process to academic success. Every step we do in the early age represents a process to bring us to the society as we become older and more mature people. In the academic society, students need to know the learning steps in order to become successful in writing and reading. Facing obstacles during the process of learning helps me to improve my writing and reading processes, which benefits me to become a better learner as I can adapt the process to the future.
Reading process helps me to become a better learner in writing. Beginning of the class, I thought that I could read without taking notes or annotations. Missing the details, I only learned about the summary. As the time goes on, I learned that annotation is important part of the reading process in order to become a better learner in class. Annotating helps me to keep track of the information I read and gives me easier time to find quotations. In order for me to write a good essay, I need to know the details of the articles or books to integrate the quotations into my essays. Looking back to eportfolio, I found the journals very helpful that they kept me to understand the text of the articles, such as the sociological imaginations and Warriors Don’t Cry. As I annotate, I can learn more about the article or book that can help me to write a better essay in the future. Annotating while reading is a part that helps me to become successful in writing, bringing this skill to my future classes and even jobs.
As I keep adapting the process of reading, I learned that “chunking” and writing journals or summary can benefit me to achieve better as a learner. Before the class, my reading speed was not great that I kept forgetting and missing the informations. While chunking in Warriors Don’t Cry, I could feel that my understanding has gotten better while my reading speed increased. “Chunking” helps me not only to improve the reading speed, but also to give a better understanding of the texts. What I learned from chunking was that the environment contributed a great factor that could affect reading. With the skill of chunking, I can write journals better with better understanding of the summary. The adaptation of the skill of chunking leads me to write better essays in the future.
While reading can be an important part of the learning process, improving my writing skill is the most important that maximizes my ability to become a better learner. Before writing essays in the class, I did grammar practice such as the adjective clauses, subordinate clauses, and appositive worksheets. Those worksheets improved my writing as I learned how to apply those clauses to combine the sentences, which benefited a lot in my writing. With the help of the sentence level worksheets, I have become more successful in my writing. Creating visualization before writing helps me to organize my ideas. Before the class, I only did outlines with only words. Even though outlines help me, visualization gives me a better and clear ideas and organization of the essay. In the eportfolio, every essay I did had visualizations. While creating a visual outline, I learned better on my organization of the essay, helping my to bring out more ideas. As I learned how I should improve my writing, my writing skill became stronger and stronger over time as I keep becoming a better learner.
PIE is the most important format in essay, creating stronger body paragraphs to help my essay better. Before the class, I did not know what PIE was, lacking on what I should build the paragraphs stronger. As the time in class goes on, I learned that while writing body paragraphs, I need to consider PIE, which is informations and explanations. While struggling with writing explanations for most of the paragraphs, I learned that I need to add more informations as I write. In many students, PIE is one of the most difficulties they can overcome. With this class, I learned how to write body paragraphs in PIE format. After writing essays, I found that peer response helps me to edit and make stronger paragraphs. Other english teachers I had did not give peer response, which gave me a hard time to edit to make essay better. But in this class, with peer response, I learned how I should connect sentences or make our adjective clauses to build my sentences stronger. With all the writing skills I learned in this class, I not only have improved my writing, but also in the future as well.
All in all, with the reading process and writing process in this class, I became a stronger learner. Now, as I write or read, my perspective on writing and reading will change. While I adapt those learning process, I need to learn and keep use those skills to become a more mature person. With all my work in eportfolio and blog, I can see the improvement starting from day 1 in the class. I am glad that I had taken this course. In order for me to become successful in the future, I will use the skills I learned to apply to other classes as well.
