During the last two quarters, I have learned ways to maximize my learning ability as a student. While going through hardships, I learned how to stand up and improve my essays in the class. Getting comments on the essays, looking at the weakness of the essays, and reading several articles, helped me to improve as a reader and writer. With those skills I learned in this class, I hope I can apply to other classes that will impress the teachers. I can see the change in learning skills since the first quarter. The essays I wrote needed to be prepared in advance in order to be ready. Such essays became a learning tool for me to improve my writing and reading as a way to get ready for the next English class. Over the two quarters, I have learned essential skills that achieved the student learning outcomes in this class, which can help me to remember those skills and apply to the future classes.
By the end of this English class, I have involved in the larger academic discourse communities that helped me to become a better learner. With the articles and chapters we read in class, I learned how to identify and synthesize the sociological terms into one big idea. Such skill let me to change into the next level in learning that helped me identify myself into a larger discourse community. By looking at the blog, I have learned how to synthesize the ideas and combine into one big idea, interrelating crime, deviance, and criminal justice system. This essay identified me as a part of the discourse communities. Getting peer response from another and giving comments on other essays helped me to become in a part of the communities. With such discussion, I not only interacted with different styles of writings, but also improved my writing as well.
During the two quarters, I learned how to use writing and reading to develop my perspectives. The sociological theories we learned in class needed to think carefully on how they can interrelate, combining into one big idea with my own thinking. In the eportfolio, We can see the different levels of questions as a way to develop my perspectives. Every time I finished reading, I asked myself the style of questions, such as comprehension, application, anayslsy, evaluation, and synthesis. Such questions helped me to understand more about the certain articles that can develop my thinkings. In the Crime essay, I learned how to evaluate with the sociological terms. Using those terms to relate with my personal experience helped me to seek my perspectives on certain sociological terms. Through my writing, I learned how to express my own ideas.
In the two quarters, I learned how to develop my writing and reading skills into another level that helped me to communicate during the integrated process. After reading several articles, I learned how to develop strong arguments to the focus questions, using those articles as examples. By looking at the eportfolio, the summaries and analysis of the articles are part of ways that helped me to express my own ideas. With those analysis, I could create a strong thesis that can express my own ideas. The essays are a way to communicate through the process of reading and writing. The vocabulary dictionary also helped me to integrate into my writing, which helped me to write more advanced sentences.
Through the reading and writing process, the essays I wrote have improved every time. The process helped me to increase the effectiveness. The strategies I learned in class became essential skills for the essays. Every essay in the blog or eportfolio, I have gone through many times proofreading, revising, and editing. After the peer response, I learned how to change and edit that could help my essays to develop. The PiE skill I learned helped me essay dramatically. At first, I did not know how to organize my ideas in paragraphs. But after learning PiE, I know that it can improve my writing. With such skill, I have accomplished my essays. Looking at the eportofilo, I find the grammar worksheets be really helpful in my writing.
All in all, the skills I learn in class in reading and writing helped me to achieve the Student Learning Outcomes. In this class, I learned how to read better, write better, and think better that improve my essays and reading skill. I can see a huge difference between the first essay I wrote in class and the last essay in English IT, especially in terms of sentence level and paragraph level. With the skills I learned in this class, I will apply to other English classes that will surprise the teachers. Over 2 quarters, I learned a lot not only in writing and reading, but also as a college student.
